Diagnosis and removal of skin lesions by a specialist doctor
Some skin lesions require removal for diagnosis, symptoms or treatment. Minor dermatological surgery allows selected lesions to be safely removed under local anaesthetic in clinic.
Procedures are performed by Dr Ed Gibbons following medical assessment to confirm suitability and discuss alternatives.

Lesions commonly assessed and treated
We manage a wide range of skin lesions including:
Diagnostic procedures
- skin biopsies
- uncertain or changing lesions
Benign lesions
- moles (when appropriate for removal)
- cysts
- skin tags
- seborrhoeic keratoses
- milia
- comedonal cysts
- verrucae
Medical treatment
- selected basal cell carcinomas
- keloid scars (steroid injection)
Suitability depends on the size, location and clinical features of the lesion. Some lesions require referral to specialist services for safest management.
Some lesions require monitoring rather than removal and may be managed through our skin cancer screening clinic.
Before any procedure
A consultation is required to:
- confirm diagnosis
- discuss treatment options
- explain risks and expected healing
- decide if removal in clinic is appropriate
Lesions are rarely removed at the first visit. Usually, procedures are scheduled separately to allow appropriate preparation and consent.
During the procedure
- the area is cleaned carefully
- local anaesthetic is used to numb the skin
- the lesion is removed using an appropriate technique
- the wound may be stitched or dressed
- aftercare instructions are provided
Most procedures take approximately 40-60 minutes.
Recovery and follow-up
Healing time varies depending on the site and procedure performed.
You may require:
- dressing care
- stitch removal
- follow-up appointment
Where clinically indicated, samples are sent for laboratory analysis and results will be discussed with you.
Specialist referral
Some lesions cannot safely be removed in clinic due to size, location, severity or complexity.
In these cases we will arrange referral to an appropriate specialist service to ensure optimal treatment.
